Although I am a sports writer first and foremost, I am also a huge social media enthusiast. Therefore, it was only natural that I would go to Chelsea Piers to cover an epic basketball game between two social media giants who have professional athletes and teams as clients.
VaynerMedia counts the New York Jets and the New Jersey Nets as clients while Carrot Creative includes the NFL as one of their clients and has worked with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and NBA player Kevin Love in the past.
In fact, Carrot co-founder Mike Germano, the architect of the classic matchup against Vayner, missed the game because he was sitting in Jerry Jones’s suite watching the preseason Dallas Cowboys vs. Oakland Raiders game for business.
Thus, Carrot was left emotionally depleted. They jumped out to an early 5-0 lead due to Vayner missing their first few shots; however, Vayner quickly recovered and never looked back. Vayner led by as many as 30 points before finishing with a 61-41 victory.
I told Carrot Junior Creative Colin Murphy that I would spin the story to make it not look like a beatdown, so I’ll keep my word. It wasn’t a beatdown, people, it was a massacre. The effort from Carrot was there, but they were missing one key ingredient – a professional baller.
Vayner’s secret weapon was 6’10″ center John Oates, a three-year starter at Boston College and a former professional basketball player overseas. There were rumors and whispers that Vayner maneuvered a deal to employ Oates for the duration of the game, but further investigative digging into the matter by yours truly revealed that Oates is indeed a legitimate employee of Vayner as a project manager.
Oates, AJ Vaynerchuk, and Sam Taggart (who didn’t let a sprained ankle hobble him) led a team that came prepared to battle. Watch the exclusive highlights and interviews of the game below!
