University of Kentucky basketball is a hot topic these days. Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that 25-year-old former UK guard Angela Phillips has become a sizzling commodity in the modeling world.
The former baller was the starting point guard her first two years at UK before transferring to Indiana St. “My favorite part about UK was that I always had company in the gym. No matter if it was 6am or 11pm, I could always count on one of the UK guys being there, such as Chuck Hayes, Rajon Rondo, or Kelenna Azubuike,” she said.
Hayes and Angela were close. “I remember my first day in the gym. Chuck came up to me and gave me the rundown on everything, and let me know he had my back. So, from then, on we were friends,” she said. “He is the biggest goof, and I love that he is always smiling.”
Angela and Azubuike used to get late night snacks together. They even shot a commercial together for UK basketball (seen below). She said, “He is such an intelligent guy and always fun to be around.”
But, her best friend on the men’s team was Ramel Bradley. “He and I became very close and still remain close today,” she said. “He made fun of my southern accent and I made fun of his Brooklyn accent and how he called everyone ‘son’.”
After averaging 32.2 minutes and 8.3 points in her four-year playing career, Angela received offers to play professionally in Europe. However, she had also come to the attention of modeling agencies due to her high profile as a collegiate athlete and her unique look (Cherokee Indian and Irish blood). Angela chose modeling because she wanted to begin a new journey in life.
“What I have learned is that once you are an athlete, you are always an athlete,” she said. “I practice just as hard for my photo shoots as I did for my free throws, and have the same drive and passion that I did for basketball.”
Her career has taken off. Filmmaker Alonzo Anderson is currently writing a script based on her life called “Not just another Pretty Face.” He also wrote the script for StepSisters, a movie that Angela will be starring in.
In addition, she is the spokesmodel and Director of Operations for a new NFL ad and service campaign with 2004 Pro Bowl selection Eddie Drummond. She is also the cover model for popular clothing brand Nuvula’s website.
After being named the July cover model for Bella Petite magazine, she started producing petite fashion shows and photo shoots for Bella Petite. She was recently named Regional Editorial Director of the company, a position she regards with great pride and respect.
Angela has even ventured into the music video industry. She was the lead model in the Yung Joc video “Wow” and was also featured in the Gorilla Zoe video “Illusions.”
However, she hasn’t forgotten about her love for sports. She was a fan of all sports while growing up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. “My two older brothers played football, baseball, golf, and basketball, so I just fell in love with the passion, dedication, and competitiveness of sports,” she said.
Being a Los Angeles Lakers fan also ran in the family. “We had a Lakers room in our house. One of my brothers convinced my parents to paint the room yellow and purple,” she said. Kobe Bryant, as a result, is her favorite player. But, she is also a fan of Rondo and the Boston Celtics because she and Rondo were gym rat buddies in college.
In the 2010 NBA Finals, Angela was torn on whom to cheer for. “I am a Kobe fan to the core but I was cheering Rondo on the whole time. Knowing him personally, I know what a hard worker he is so it’s hard not to cheer for someone like that!” she said.
As a Tennessee native, cheering for the Tennessee Titans has become a must. And, currently living in Atlanta, Georgia has made her an Atlanta Braves fan.
Her heart, though, will always belong to Big Blue Nation. “Just like Ashley Judd, I will always bleed blue!” she said. “The atmosphere for games at Memorial Coliseum and Rupp Arena was amazing because the fans in Kentucky love their Wildcat basketball.”
One of her future goals is to host a sports talk show and invite guests such as Venus Willams and Reggie Bush.
As for taking her out on a date, she cares about two things: “Take me to a sporting event or anywhere outdoors, but no matter where we go, there must be good food! I love to eat!” Wait – are models allowed to eat?
This is why we love Angela. It’s not every day that a high-major athlete becomes a gorgeous model. However, Angela has continued to remain down-to-earth, still loves sports to death, and eats…a lot. Angela’s journey is just beginning as she moves onward in the entertainment industry. We wish her the best of luck, and go Big Blue!
