Jenn Sterger and Brett Favre: What is the Truth?

I have avoided the Jenn Sterger-Brett Favre controversy for a long time. After writing enough material on the girl, I went into reclusion on the topic.

But, it’s time I leave the Sterger-free zone. The Sterger-Favre topic is hot enough that most of the major news organizations have discussed it, including ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s TODAY Show, and CNN.

The NFL is investigating whether Favre violated the league’s personal conduct policy. ESPN’s NFL Nation Blog has a good description of the policy. Essentially, everyone associated with the NFL is required to avoid “conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in the National Football League.”

One specific description caught my eye: “Conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs, or NFL players.” What Favre allegedly did with the pictures would fall under this category.

Very few people know what really went on with Favre and Sterger. If the allegations are true, were the pictures harassment or part of a mutual flirtation? And, why hasn’t Sterger come forward?

Harassment or Mutual Flirtation?

Let’s consider first whether Sterger was uncomfortable, constituting a sexual harassment case. According to Deadspin’s original article, Sterger thought “if she went forward with how aggressive he was and how skeeved out she was to some of her superiors, she suspected she might lose her job.”

However, unlike a typical harassment case, Deadspin’s AJ Daulerio wrote: “Soon after Jenn told me this story, she balked about releasing the photos or voicemails she still had on her computer. They were still on her computer because they were fun to laugh at amongst friends, but she never planned to sell them or use them to bolster her profile.”

Fun to laugh at? That hardly sounds like something a victim would say. Sterger clearly thought the situation was a big joke.

Why Hasn’t Sterger Come Forward?

According to Deadspin, “Sterger claimed she spurned Favre’s advances because he was married, but also because she was working for the Jets at the time she didn’t think it was the best idea to start a torrid affair with the team’s highest profile player.”

So, in other words, Sterger respects the sanctity of marriage and doesn’t want to draw attention to herself by scandals. Now, that’s a joke.

A few months ago, Sterger tweeted a highly disrespectful and scandalous comment about Danica Patrick, suggesting that Patrick would be involved in a sexual act (bukkake) at GoDaddy.com. Where was her respect for Patrick’s husband and the sanctity of marriage then?

Sterger’s response to the world regarding offensive comment about Danica Patrick

In 2008, Sterger and Sports Illustrated writer Will Carroll had an intimate IM conversation about who should make Carroll’s Laminated List. He wrote, “The List is basically a free pass, the five people you’re allowed to deal with outside of your relationship without consequence.”

Some insightful quotes from Sterger include (note the first one is on extramarital affairs):

2:23:52 PM Jenn Sterger: Hmm.. Laminated lists??.. Eh.. I think girls are generally smarter than men when it comes to getting away with side action… but.. I guess there are certain people I know I would have an easier time explaining than others.

In case the above website gets taken down in the coming days, you can read the full chat transcript at TheNationalSportsDaily.com.

The chat happened in 2008. Sterger worked for the Jets in 2008 when the Favre incident allegedly happened. Is this a coincidence or is there a bigger picture here?

Let’s be honest. Sterger isn’t some nice, homely girl who was an innocent bystander. She either knew what she was doing by discussing the story with the Editor-in-Chief of Deadspin or she was just ignorant. Regardless, if she didn’t want the story to come out, the story wouldn’t have come out.

Now, her act of silence may be an attempt to preserve some type of innocence in the whole mess. Innocence from a girl who is as comfortable with a public, sexually-laced conversation as she is in describing herself naked? I don’t think so.

She also recently retained the legal services of LaRusso & Conway, a Long Island-based “firm that focuses on criminal and civil litigation,” according to TerezOwens.com. Sterger is getting ready for a big, fat pay day – another reason for her prolonged silence.

Sterger’s Future Employment

Since it was mentioned in the original Deadspin article as a concern, let’s analyze Sterger’s actual possibility of future employment. At the moment, Versus appears to be reaping the benefits of increased viewers for The Daily Line. However, when the rumors die down, will her spotlight do the same?

In all reality, a legitimate news organization will never hire Sterger because, let’s face it, you just can’t take her seriously. I have yet to hear her say or write a single piece of intelligent analysis on sports. In addition, networks will be afraid that the Favre controversy will repeat itself.

Sterger is, shall we call it, a dangerous hire. The last thing ESPN or networks like ESPN need to worry about is whether one of their employees is receiving inappropriate texts and pictures from an athlete the networks cover on a daily basis, and then handling it by talking to the Editor-in-Chief of the biggest, and often shameless, sports blog. Reporters are supposed to cover the news, not be the news.

Favre in Violation of NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy For Mutual “Interaction”?

Although adultery is a moral crime, it’s not punishable by the NFL. Sterger was employed by the Jets but as an independent contractor rather than a full-time, regular employee – relevant if the NFL has policies about employees dating. The biggest authority Favre would need to answer to is his wife.

If the prior information in this article hasn’t led you to a conclusion that Jenn Sterger was likely a willing participant in the situation, let me present another question: If you’re Favre and you want to sleep with a hot, young vixen, why would you attempt to initially court her with nude photos of yourself? That doesn’t seem like a logical sequence of events. Wouldn’t he use other methods like cash bribes, gifts, promises of eternal attention and undying love, etc.?

My point is: there must be additional details to the story of which we are unaware. It’s not just a simple case of a player sending unwanted pictures of himself to a girl. Unfortunately, we may never know the truth.
