Clinton Portis Released by Redskins

We all know that the life span of an NFL running back is short. Clinton Portis, one of the toughest and most hardworking ball-carriers, has been cut by the Washington Redskins.

A slew of injuries hindered his on-field appearances in the last few years, but Portis has always had a reputation for playing through pain and giving it his all despite his physical condition.

He was due to make $8.2 million in 2011, so it’s understandable as to why owner Dan Snyder and head coach Mike Shanahan didn’t want to keep him; why would you pay over $8 million dollars for an oft-injured running back who sits out more than he plays?

Nevertheless, Portis needs just 77 yards to reach 10,000 career rushing yards. He said, “Being a Redskin was a special part of my life. Coming and being in that organization, I turned from a kid having fun to a man carrying responsibilities. I tried to put the world on my shoulders for coach Gibbs and the Redskins fans.”

I took him in the second round of my 2008 fantasy football draft, and he was extremely instrumental in helping me win the league title that year. If Portis had stayed healthy, he would’ve been a strong MVP candidate. I will always have a soft spot in my heart and a ton of respect for him.

He will find a home somewhere else, and be productive in a timeshare or third-down role; however, it is still sad to see him get released.
